HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) has been the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11. It compresses photos more efficiently than JPG, meaning better quality at a smaller file size — great for saving storage space on your phone and in iCloud. The trade-off is compatibility: many Windows PCs, Android devices, older software, and web upload forms still don't recognize HEIC files without an extra plugin or converter.

This is the single most common file-format frustration iPhone users run into: you AirDrop or email a photo, and the recipient sees a broken file icon instead of the picture. Converting to JPG instantly solves this, since JPG has been the universal photo standard for decades and is accepted absolutely everywhere.
