JPG (JPEG) is the format most cameras and phones save photos in by default, because it compresses images to keep file sizes small. That compression is lossy, meaning some image detail is discarded every time the file is saved. PNG works differently: it uses lossless compression, so nothing is thrown away, and it supports a transparent background — something JPG can never do.

People convert JPG to PNG for a handful of common reasons. Designers need a transparent background so a logo or product photo can sit cleanly over any color. Developers want PNG for screenshots, icons, and UI mockups where sharp edges and text matter more than file size. Anyone editing an image repeatedly in tools like Photoshop or GIMP will also get better results working from a PNG, since re-saving a JPG again and again slowly degrades quality through generation loss.
