About JPG to HEIC Conversion

HEIC generally achieves noticeably smaller file sizes than JPG at a comparable level of visual quality, thanks to a more modern, efficient compression algorithm (derived from HEVC/H.265 video compression). That's why Apple made it the default photo format on iPhones starting with iOS 11 — it lets users store roughly twice as many photos in the same iCloud or device storage space.

Converting JPG to HEIC is less common than the reverse, but it has real use cases: consolidating a photo library into a more storage-efficient format, preparing images for an Apple ecosystem workflow that expects HEIC, or simply testing how a particular image compresses under the newer codec.

MediaLift performs this conversion using pillow-heif, which encodes standard, broadly-compatible HEIC files. The photo's color and detail are preserved at a high quality setting tuned to keep visual differences from the original JPG effectively invisible, while still taking advantage of HEIC's more efficient compression to reduce file size.

It's worth being realistic about compatibility before converting a whole library: while HEIC is well supported on Apple devices and in newer versions of Windows, some older software, some Android devices, and various third-party tools still don't open HEIC without an extra codec or plugin. If a photo needs to be viewed or edited on a system you don't control, JPG remains the safer bet.
