PNG has no such restriction, supporting full 24-bit color. For simple graphics — flat-color logos, basic icons, line art, and diagrams with a limited number of distinct colors — this conversion is essentially lossless in practice, since the image likely uses far fewer than 256 colors to begin with. For photographs or images with smooth gradients, some visible color banding is unavoidable, since GIF simply cannot represent the same range of colors PNG can.
